Leah Shearer (Choctaw)
University of Houston – History
Leah Shearer, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is an incoming graduate student of the American Indian Studies Master's program. During her time at UCLA, she plans to concentrate in history and law. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Houston with a major in history. She received the Outstanding Senior Honors Thesis award for her undergraduate thesis, "The Crisis of Crow Dog", which focuses on the history behind the shift in Indian Criminal Law in the late 1800's. After graduating from the University of Houston, Leah spent a year singing and playing the guitar for various venues in the Houston area. She participated in the Washington Internships for Native Students program (WINS) in the summer of 2009, where she interned at the Department of Veterans Affairs and attended a Federal Indian Policy course through American University. She currently looks forward to learning more about American Indian history, law and policy.
